Connecting

BBC Radio 3’s ‘Between the Ears’ slot calls for finely crafted, sonically rich radio, and in 2004 Simon worked closely with writer Ken Hollings to produce Connecting which, with its use of original score, sound design, found sound, archive material and interview, perfectly fitted the bill. Connecting is the story behind the first computer hackers who, armed with only a telephone, a little technical knowledge and a lot of curiosity, learnt how to exploit the phone system, discovering how it worked and what else it could be made to do.

Using and manipulating the sounds of the early phone network to create an original score took the listener inside this world, with the invitation to ‘go where only your ears can take you’.
