BBC Radio 4’s Friday Play is the home of challenging radio drama, and in 2002 Simon worked with writer Sarah Daniels and producer Karen Rose to create The Long Farewell to fill this slot. Described as a triumph of research, writing, performance and audio production, Radio 4 controller Helen Boaden said of The Long Farewell that ‘its sadness was beyond tears.’
The Long Farewell vividly recreates the emotional turmoil triggered by the slow and inevitable death of a young mother and wife. Simon’s use of sound and music created a haunting environment that aided the delivery of a range of powerful emotions to the listener.
