I recently spent the day with Central Saint Martins Fine Art students talking about the pioneering electronic composers of the 50’s and 60’s and their techniques. As well as creating 1/4 inch tape loops, we also used classic analog devices such as Tone Generator and Theremin to perform an improvised soundtrack for Chris Marker’s La Jetee. Regardless of the short amount of time available to prepare and practice, the soundtrack has some really powerful moments leading towards the films shocking conclusion. Careful thought was put into the use of specific tones and sound colours to reflect the films movement between dark present and peaceful past.  You can hear the performance below.
